Summary

Earl Gerhard, left, Capt. Jake Washington, commanding officer of Naval Facilities; Ken Carlson, from Clark-Blinderman-Zander-GRAEF (CBZG); Rear Adm. Lee Metcalf, deputy commander of Navy Region Midwest; Capt. John W. Peterson, RTC commanding officer; Capt. David A. Schnell, Naval Station Great Lakes commanding officer; and Ralph Hammel cut a ribbon to officially open the USS Missouri Small Arms Marksmanship Trainer (SAMT). SAMT, now named after the historic Iowa-class battleship, familiarizes recruits on the handling and shooting of small arms weapons. Gerhard served on Missouri during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 as an undesignated hospital corpsman striker. Hammel is a U.S. Marine veteran who served with the Marine detachment aboard Missouri from 1946 to 1948. (U.S. Navy photo by Scott A. Thornbloom/Released) .
