Portrait date unknown. Martha Johnson Patterson, Andrew Johnson's first and favorite child, led a remarkable life. She attended school in Georgetown, befriended First Lady Sarah Polk and later had the distinction of being the daughter of a president, wife of a senator and even a White House hostess during her father's administration! Upon her death, she requested in her will that the family burial site also become a national cemetery for veterans.
