familiar with them centuries ago. Travellers, too, carved theirnames thereon nearly a hundred years before the Pilgrims landed atPlymouth. In 1526 Don Joseph de Bazemzellos, whoever he mayhave been, inscribed his name on this wonderful rock. In 1629Juan Gonzales carved his name there. Before he came, in 1606, amessenger passed by the place with despatches. And later still,on * September 28, 1736, Don Martini de Cochea wrote his namethere. What business brought travellers there three hundred andfifty years ago, and more, the curious only may conjecture. Themystery becomes more mysterious in consequence of these facts, and the rock more of a marvel, especially when we consider thatthese travellers found the original inscriptions there, and may havebeen carved thereon five hundred or a thousand years before. Thus, in connection with the cave and cliff dwellings are foundnumerous hieroglyphics, or picture-writing, painted or engraved on 66 MARVELS OF THE NEW WEST. iil!lliiiiilllllllllillll

As there is no figure ofa horse among them, it is presumed that they antedate the introduc-tion of that useful animal into the country. The following is a good illustration of the rock inscriptions thatappear in different parts of the New West: —
