Mayor Bertha Landes, ca 1927 (MOHAI 6028)
Summary
Bertha Knight Landes was the first woman to be elected mayor of a major American city. In her single term, from 1926 to 1928, she improved law enforcement, expanded the programs of the parks department, and improved the management of City Light. Mrs. Landes didn't think of herself as a career politician, and she retired from politics after losing the next election.
This photo shows Mayor Bertha Knight Landes seated at a hearing bench in front of a large American flag.
The nitrate negative has deteriorated and damaged the image.
