Summary

Members from various Afghan government ministries and departments listen as Wahidullah Halimyav, a legal advisor working with Afghanistan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, introduces the different amendments during a consultation workshop to review proposed changes to the national law governing land management in Kabul, Afghanistan, Oct. 25. Second only to the Afghan people, land is a crucial resource for the Afghan government – they fight to secure it and work hard to develop it to bring economic stability to the nation. In an effort to further these causes, the Afghan government, partnered with the USAID’s Land Reform in Afghanistan project and members of the International Security Assistance Force, is taking steps to better manage the land for the Afghan people. The laws governing land in Afghanistan range from a 1923 Code on the Sale of Government Land to a Land Management Law signed into law by President Karzai in 2008. Once reviewed this amended law must pass through Afghanistan’s Parliament before being signed into law.
