“I no longer get pleasure out of much in life. The Mühürdar club here has closed, so I sit with your mother at a seaside table in one of five other empty clubs and we look out at the sea, bored and sad, as the waters darken. Then we go home. Where is my Semiramis, where is my Güzin, my Nesrin, my Cemil? Not to be able to see them running about playing makes me quite gloomy. But I hide my feelings… You can’t imagine how much it pains my soul, this emptiness. This morning we were out on the big balcony again, drinking coffee, and I found myself looking out to see if you were all going down to seabathe. I sighed and said what I was thinking. ‘What’s the matter with you?’ your mother said. ‘They’re all in good health, thank God. They’re enjoying themselves, they have a happy life. Let’s be thankful and happy for them.’ I thought about that. It comforted me.”

“Artık hayatta çok şeyden neşe alamıyorum. Burada Mühürdar falan kapandı. Beş tenha gazinonun deniz üstündeki masalarında annenle oturup melul ve mahzun denizin kararmasına bakarak dönüyoruz. Hani Semiramisim, hani Güzinim, Nesrinim, Cemilim? Onların koşup gelmesini, oynamasını görmemek beni pek mahzun ediyor. Belli etmemek istiyorum ama… Ruhuma ne derece azap verip boşluk olduğunu tasavvur edemezsin. Bu sabah yine büyük balkonda kahvemizi içiyorduk. Deniz hamamına gitmenizi gözlerim aradı. Ah, hanıma söyledim. ‘Ne oluyorsun, elhamdülillah onlar afiyetteler. Hoş vakit geçiriyorlar. Mesud hayattalar. Şükredelim, sevinelim’ dedi. Düşündüm. Müteselli oldum.”
