MORR 5094, Morristown National Historical Park, 2016.
Summary
Museum collection item: MORR 5094, the door from the old jail in Morristown. Tories, Hessian prisoners and other offenders were kept there under guard during the Revolutionary War. The rectangular opening you see in the photo was for passing food through to the prisoners. The jail stood on Morristown Green, near the court house. Both the jail and court house were torn down in 1827 to make way for new buildings. A monument now marks the spot once occupied by these structures, opposite the Park Square Building. Currently in museum storage, this item will eventually be on exhibit in the Washington's Headquarters Museum in the military gallery. Item description: the door is made of three thicknesses of timber, each approximately 1 3/4" thick. Heavy strips of iron sit between each timber. Size: 5'8" high, 29" wide, 5 3/4" thick.
