description

Summary

Chris Majewski, Marine Corps Community Services tour guide, gives Marines of Marine Tactical Air Control Squadron 18 a brief overview of the Battle of Iwo Jima near the remains of a World War II-era Japanese machine gun nest and other relics of the war. More than 60 Marines from MTACS-18, Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, hiked from Iwo To Field to the top of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima as part of the unit’s professional military education program May 25. The Battle of Iwo Jima, which took place between Feb. 19 and March 26, 1945, is among the most famous in the Corps’ history and was made famous world-wide by Joe Rosenthal’s Pulitzer-prize winning photograph of the flag-raising at Mount Suribachi.
