Summary

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Aug. 09, 2008) Navy Diver 1st Class James Ohalek and Boatswain's Mate 1st Class William Bailey clean dive helmets after a dive under the former Soviet submarine-turned museum, Juliett 484, in Providence. The submarine sank at her mooring point in about 30 feet of water after a nor'easter struck Providence in April 2007. Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2, a U.S. Army Dive Company and a Naval Sea Systems Command support unit used lift bags and pontoons in combination with eight dewatering pumps to lift the submarine. This training exercise is part of the Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) program. Through IRT, military divers receive training by taking part in real-world, community-based projects. IRT and civil-military projects improve military readiness and benefit the local communities.
