Most of the gold is found in the quartz mines of Idaho, Boiseand Alturas counties, and there are placer diggings along the headwaters of the Sal-mon and Clearwater. Silver is found near Ruby City and Silver City, in the Owyheedistrict, and some of the mines are very rich. Coal has been discovered within twenty-five miles of Boise City. History.—Idaho, one of the Northwestern Territories, comprises a part of theLouisiana purchase of 1803. It was organized as a Territory March 3, 1863, out ofportions of Nebraska, Dakota and Washington Territories. At that time it includedall Montana and nearly all of Wyoming, and had an area of 375,000 square miles. Itreceived its present limits in 1868. Boise City is the Territorial capital.
