Saunders was born in 1832 in Liverpool, England. He trained as a photographer in London and moved to China in 1862, where he established a successful photographic studio in Shanghai. He was one of the first photographers to document the people and landscapes of China, and his work has been described as "a priceless visual record of a bygone era". Saunders' photographs captured the daily lives of Chinese people, including street scenes, markets and religious ceremonies. He also documented China's architecture and landscapes, including the Great Wall and the Yangtze River. His work was highly regarded and he received numerous awards for his photography, including a gold medal at the Vienna Exhibition in 1873. In addition to his commercial work, Saunders was a member of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps and documented the Taiping Rebellion and other military campaigns in China. He was also a member of the Royal Photographic Society and exhibited his work in London and Paris. Saunders died in Shanghai in 1892, leaving a legacy of over 3,000 photographs that provide a unique insight into life in China in the late 19th century. His work continues to be studied and appreciated by historians and photography enthusiasts around the world.
