Nodding onion (Allium cernuum), Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, 2014.
Summary
Although no longer used in modern kitchens, this onion still makes a beautiful addition to any sunny garden or xeric (i.e., very dry) landscape. They are easy to identify from other native onions because of a nodding flower umbrel (i.e., short flower stalks spreading from a common point, somewhat like an umbrella) atop a leafless flower stalk called a scape.
