North Carolina Route 1417 Bridge, Spanning Dan River, Danbury, Stokes County, NC
Summary
Significance: This Pratt Pony truss bridge spans a narrow gorge of the Dan River. Its builder, the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company, combined the following details into its bridges: threaded pins, laced vertical member details, tear-shaped eyes of the counter, main-ties, and bottom chords. The bridge is 70 feet long and is divided into four panels. Its distinguishing feature is its unique substructure of round steel columns joined by steel plates. They form a protective response to the flood waters that a bridge would have to resist in a narrow crossing.
