Lantern Slide (black and white); a young woman crouching down, on top of plant leaves; sea in the background; Polynesia. Photographic process
Location: It is unknown whether this image is photographed in Mangareva, or Raivavae.
Overview of Routledge collection: This collection of lantern slides were photographed during two archaeological expeditions, conducted by William Scoresby Routledge and his wife Katherine Maria Routledge. The majority of the collection was photographed during the ‘Mana Expedition’ in 1913-1915 to Easter Island, which also stopped in Chile and Juan Fernandez Islands on route. Whilst in Chile, Routledge enlisted the aid of Chilean men and boys. One boy from Juan Fernandez is depicted in a number of images, used as a scale guide. Subsequent expeditions to Mangareva, Raivaevae, and Rapa Iti were made in 1921-1923, during which a smaller number of images were made.
