Panholes, City of Rocks National Reserve, 2015.
Summary
A panhole is a depressed erosional feature that you'll find on flat or gently-sloping rock. A result of long-term weathering, these shallow solution basins (or closed depressions) usually form on bare limestone or silicate rock (though sometimes found on granitic rock as well).
