Paul Nash - Sunset - Ruin of the Hospice, Wytschaete
Summary
Nash worked at Wytschaete in the Ypres Salient area in November 1917. His work progressed rapidly and he produced around fifty drawings, which he intended to work up in his studio back home.Image: the ruins of a building that has been completely destroyed. There are a number of graves in the foreground marked by small wooden crosses in the ground. These reflect the burnt trees standing amongst the ruins, and more trees in the background. There is a large red sun setting over the hills in the left of the composition.
