Around 1838, textile manufacturer François Stoltzenberg (1805-1875) founded the atelier F. Stoltzenberg in Roermond, where gold embroidery was made for banners and church vestments. After 1850, the Stoltzenberg atelier was expanded to include a workshop where panel frames and church furniture were also made. In charge of the workshop was the sculptor Edouard François Georges. In 1852, Stoltzenberg, Georges and architect Pierre Cuypers founded their "atelier for Christian sculpture." Initially still under the name Atelier Georges/Cuypers/Stoltzenberg. Cuypers and sculptor Georges were in charge of the day-to-day running of the atelier; Stoltzenberg dealt with the administration. In 1854 Georges left the studio and moved to Utrecht.
