Pilgrimage to the historic Wolf Hunter's Chapel in the Grafenwoehr Training Area

More than 150 members of Catholic parishes from the surrounding communities participate in a pilgrimage to the historic Wolf Hunter's Chapel in the Grafenwoehr Training Area, May 27, 2018. The Wolf Hunter's Chapel was originally built in the 17th century. Local legend has it that a man went into the forest to hunt wolves, which were considered a threat to livestock and travelers. The hunter shot and wounded a wolf that knocked him down. He called out for help, beseeching the heavens for rescue. At that very moment, the hunter's son appeared unexpectedly, killing the wolf with one shot and saving his father. The seemingly miraculous intervention was attributed to the Holy Trinity and the Virgin Mary. The grateful hunter built the chapel in the woods, which his family maintained for many years. During the centuries, the chapel fell into ruin, and by the 1960s, was almost completely demolished. However, in 1967, the Grafenwoehr Federal Forestry Office restored the building.
