Nicolaes Maes was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age, known for his genre scenes and portraits. He was a pupil of Rembrandt and was strongly influenced by his teacher's use of light and shadow. Maes is best known for his domestic interiors, often depicting women engaged in everyday activities. His work is characterised by his attention to detail and naturalistic rendering of his subjects. Maes' paintings are in major museum collections around the world, including the Louvre, the National Gallery in London and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
