This artiodactyl (even-toed) mammal is indigenous to North America. Commonly known simply as pronghorn (Antilocapra americana), it is the fastest land animal in North America, able to reach 60 miles per hour! DID YOU KNOW... about five antilocaprid species existed when humans entered North America? Sadly, except for the Antilocapra americana, all are now extinct. You may have heard it referred to as the prong buck, pronghorn antelope, cabri or antelope; however, it is not actually an antelope. The name probably comes from its resemblance to true antelopes of the Old World and even fills a similar ecological niche here due to parallel evolution.
