Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence relating to the purchase and distribution of oil for lighthouses in Massachusetts and Maine received by Superintendent of Massachusetts Lighthouses Benjamin Lincoln. Included are correspondence from Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton and Revenue Commissioners Tench Coxe and William Miller. The file unit also contains correspondence related to the supply of oil for lighthouses in Savannah, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; and New London, Connecticut.
