sip„o,s Ti 548 TURNTABLE DRI\ES. Turntable Motor Drives. — Where many locomotives arehandled the work of a turntable is usualh intermittent, rushingfor a short period and then at a standstill. To expedite themovement during the rush period it is ver) important to dothe work in the shortest time possible. The length of timerequired to turn the table b) hand depends largely on the num-ber of hands available to do the turning and even with thehandles full the work cannot be done as quickly as with a motor,and the three types in use are electric, gasoline and air. Electric Motors. — Where generators are installed in the en-gine house or machine shop close by, or where electric powercan be obtained cheaply, the electric motor is usually installedand though higher in first cost it is low in maintenance. Thefeed ^ires are run underground in conduit and brought up inthe center of the turntable to a collecting switch arranged sothat contact is made in all positions of the turntable, the
