Rct. Janelle E. Kim, Platoon 4029, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, uses a compass during a land navigation exercise Aug. 3, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits ventured into a wooded area with a compass and map to find specific locations after learning the basics of land navigation. Kim, 20, from Streetsboro, Ohio, is scheduled to graduate Aug. 28, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
