Rct. Tumia Marable, Platoon 4034, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, crawls during a portion of her combat fitness test Oct. 1, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The CFT is designed to simulate a wide range of physical challenges one might face in combat and evaluates strength, stamina, agility and coordination. It is a graduation requirement for all recruits. Marable, an 18-year-old native of South Boston, Va., is scheduled to graduate Oct. 18, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
