Rct. Zachary Muzzy, 18, Platoon 2078, Hotel Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, lifts a 30-pound ammunition can during his hour of daily free time Aug. 13, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. While some recruits prefer to relax and write letters home, others continue to train to achieve a higher level of physical fitness. Muzzy is from North Clarendon, Vt., and is scheduled to graduate Sept. 20, 2013. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
