ARABIAN GULF (Oct. 04, 2017) Rear Adm. Gregory N. Harris, the oncoming commander of Carrier Strike Group 11, speaks during a change of command ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Harris relieved Rear Adm. William D. Byrne, Jr. during the ceremony. Nimitz is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. While in the region, the ship and its carrier strike group are conducting maritime security operations to reassure allies and partners, preserve freedom of navigation, and maintain the free flow of commerce. Aircraft carriers are warships that act as airbases for carrier-based aircraft. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
