The Southern coast of the United^Caiamftu^ States was visited by a tropical hur-ricane on September 6-9, the fury ofwhich reached its climax at and near Galveston,Texas, 1:45 a. m., on Sunday, the 9th. Galves-ton is built upon the east end of a beautiful butlow-lying island some thirty miles long and six orseven miles wide at the point of greatest extent,though only a mile or two wide where the cityis built. The pressure of the wind upon thewaters of t)ie Gulf was so powerful and so con-tinuous that it lifted the waves on the northcoast many feet above the ordinary high-tidelevel, and for a short time the entire city wassubmerged. The demolition caused by the windalone, apart from the invasion of the sea, wouldhave resulted in a great loss of property and con-siderable loss of life.
