CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Inside Orbiter Processing Facility-2 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United Space Alliance technicians close space shuttle Atlantis’ midbody door for the final time. The orbiter is undergoing final preparations for its transfer to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor complex targeted for November. The work is part of Transition and Retirement of the remaining shuttle. Atlantis is being prepared for public display at the visitor complex. Over the course of its 26-year career, Atlantis spent 293 days in space during 33 missions. For more information, visit http://www.nasa.gov/transition. Summary

ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. - A piece of history left Rock Island Arsenal – Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center Sept. 25. This seven-inch boring mill was installed March 1, 1943. It was initially used to bore and finish large steel castings weighing 22 tons. In more recent history it was utilized to machine big fixture bases. It was recently auctioned as part of an effort to update equipment throughout JMTC. (U.S. Army photo by Debralee Best/RIA-JMTC)
