description

Summary

Significance: This facility, constructed between 1936 and 1937, was the first building of the multi-component Sacramento Junior College Annex, a Public Works Administration project. The library was built as classrooms for the college's geology and mining departments, a library facility, and a museum for displaying the college's Indian artifact collection. This building is an example of the application of an important architectural trend (Moderne Movement) blended with Art Deco, pre-Columbian revival, Romanesque (or Byzantine) Revival styles. It is also important for its association with architect Harry J. Devine, Sr., a prominent architect in Sacramento from 1926 until his death in 1963.
