Except for the most intrepid hikers, few people have probably noticed the massive jumble of trees and logs, and the wedge of recently disturbed earth that sits alongside a newly excavated side channel on the south bank of the Salmon River at the BLM’s Wildwood Recreation Site.
Those who have seen it may be curious of its origin, noting its haphazard look – replete with jagged tree trunks, resembling a log jam -- that belies the rustically groomed trails and log-framed picnic areas that help make Wildwood one of the BLM’s most popular sites.

It is not intended for people, though.
It’s for fish and wildlife – like coho salmon, spring chinook salmon, and winter steelhead.
And there is method behind the ostensible madness.
