Our young peo-ple cannot learn too much of these two great men, andevery effort should be put forth by the teachers of youthto induce them to study and imitate those traits of char-acter which cause the people of all nations with onevoice to call one The Father/ the other The Saviourof his country. Teachers will find close at hand numer-ous sketches that have been written of Thomas Jefferson,and many addresses presented by distinguished men onthe loftiness of purpose that characterized the life ofWilliam McKinley, our last martyred president. Thebirthdays of McKinley, Lincoln and Washington (Jan.29, Feb. 12, Feb. 22), coming so close together, may wellbe celebrated in the schools on one and the same day.

THOMAS JEFFERSON On June 11, 1776, a committee of five was appointed to draft adeclaration in compliance with the resolution which had been intro-duced on June 7, by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, and seconded byJohn Adams of Massachusetts, declaring that the United Colonieswere and of right ought to be free and independent states. Thechairman of this committee of five was Thomas Jefferson, who wroteour great charter of freedom. Associated with him were John Adams,Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingstone.It received the unanimous vote of the Congress on July 4 1776. THE DECLARATION OFINDEPENDENCE. In Congress, July 4, 1776.
