Seven people dig into the sand, each person representing a key organization and symbolically breaking ground for the up-coming solar panel farm, which is about to be built by Georgia Power, here May 15. The more than 215-acre facility is slated to be completed by the end of 2016 and is projected to produce roughly 30 megawatts of power a day. Fort Stewart’s solar farm is one of three being built in the state of Georgia by Georgia Power in conjunction with the U.S. Army. When completed, Fort Stewart will be leading the way in reaching the President of the United States’ mandate for the Army to produce 1 gigawatt of renewable energy through out all its installations.
