Summary

Sgt. Danny Roldan, a drill instructor of Platoon 1057, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, prepares to march his platoon in front of four drillmasters, experts on the Marine Corps Drill and Ceremonies Manual, during the company's initial drill evaluation July 1, 2013, on Parris Island's main parade deck. The drillmasters graded Roldan, a 26-year-old native of Elizabeth, N.J., on his ability to issue commands and perform drill movements during the evaluation. Close-order drill is used during recruit training to instill discipline, teamwork and pride. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 23, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
