He had begun The Mys-tery of Edwin Drood, which was being published in serial form, when he died at hishome, Gadshill Place, in 1870. Besides the more important works which have been mentioned, Dickens con-tributed to the magazines a great number of stories and sketches. About twelveyears before his death he began to give public readings in London.
