description

Summary

At sea aboard USS Harry S. Truman Gunners Mate 3rd Class Travis Smalls practices shooting an M203 grenade launcher during an exercise. The M203 was designed to replace the Vietnam-era M79 grenade launcher. The newer weapon also maintains the added versatility for direct fire from both the M16 and the M203 launcher tube. This dual system was combined to create a single effective weapon to be carried and used in many ways on the battlefield. Harry S. Truman is on a regularly scheduled deployment, conducting missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 3rd Class Danny Ewing Jr. File# 021215-N-4953E-002

In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
