Arthur Henri Poole - Shop at Hearne's - Lunch at the Granville

description

Summary

Two of Waterfords iconic establishments captured by Mr. Poole for today's image. Hearnes shop is still there going strong and a mecca for the discerning shopper. The Granville, next door, a great place to stay and with a fine restaurant. But what was going on that day, 22 July 1922? Whoever was due to visit had an escort of civilians and military with (wait for it) a DOG!..As Fred Dean Snr ( /photos/abandonedrailsireland/ ) , Beachcomber ( /photos/beachcomberaustralia/ ) , Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) and ofarrl ( /photos/33577523@N08/ ) all point out, this image undoubtedly captures the end of the Free-State offensive on Waterford during the Civil War ( Irish_Free_State_offensive#Free_State_troops_take_Waterford ) . Taking place between 18 and 20 July 1922, many citizens evacuated the city during the fighting - although 5 civilians were still killed in the shelling and crossfire. At least one Anti-Treaty and two Pro-Treaty fighters were killed before the Anti-Treaty side were forced to leave the city on 20 July 1922. This image seems to show Pro-Treaty forces (under Colonel John T. Prout ( John_T._Prout ) ) in the days after the conflict. They would later move on take Carrick on Suir, Cashel and Clonmel. The war took on a more "guerrilla" nature later in 1922 - before coming to a close in mid-1923. The bullet holes which our contributors point-out here (some of which seemingly remained for a while) were not the only lasting reminder of the conflict........Photographer: A. H.
