Between each windowis a flat pilaster-like buttress, characteristic of Norman and Transi-tional work. On the north wall in the third bay from the eastend is an arched niche 12f inches in width and 1 foot 1 inch inheight, the sill of which is some 7 feet above ground level. The 38 HISTORICAL MONUMENTS (SCOTLAND) COMMISSION. Parish of Coldingham. eastern arris of the adjacent buttress is stop-chamfered. Whatpurpose this niche served is obscure. Each lower division containsa double-arched arcade of semicircular form, springing from slendershafts having incurved capitals with delicately moulded abaci andbases.
