Catoctin Mountain Park - Skunk Cabbage
Summary
Skunk cabbage is one of the first flowers in the spring to bloom. It grows in and around creeks and the blooms can be under leaves. Its foul odor attracts pollinators. This plant is thermogenic (it can raise its temperature above that of surrounding air) through cellular respiration.
