Slow walk to the Greenore Railway Saloon

description

Summary

Had this image been a few miles further down the coast we could have titled it "Bad day at Blackrock" and brought back memories of Spencer Tracy and the one armed veteran taking on the town! The Greenore Railway Saloon would make a great title for a western though it would be hard to imagine a shoot out between the townspeople and the nearby cattlemen? O'Dea managed to visit on the day the Indian Summer came in 1960 and the place looks bathed in warmth and light!..Still standing (and carrying the same name in the 21st century) ( https://www.google.com/maps/@54.0062806,-6.3881204,3a,78.5y,78.7h,89.16t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sdVXNgkBUHz3e4EHf4-IGaA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 ) today's contributors gave us lots of insights into the Greenore Railway Saloon. And indeed to the railway that influenced its name. Long since closed, it seems likey that this was one of many images captured by O'Dea on the country's declining rail lines. In this case, as evidenced by the "footbridge to nowhere" in the left middle-ground, the line had closed almost a decade before this image. Please do read through the comments for colourful and educational info on the railway - and its saloon........Photographer: James P. O'Dea..Collection:James P.
