Smooth softshell turtle (Apalone mutica), Missouri National Recreational River, 2014.
Summary
Two softshell turtles are found at this recreational river. The smooth softshell in the picture may be easily confused with the spiny softshell turtle because their differences can be quite subtle. The spiny softshell has a rough carapace with spines/bumps along the front edge while the smooth softshell, true to its name, has a smooth carapace that lacks spines/bumps. The spiny softshell also has a splotchy chin and a minimal eye stripe while the smooth softshell has a distinctive white eye stripe and an unmarked, white chin and throat. Spiny softshell turtles may also show more aggression.
