Summary
The term Somaskanda refers to Shiva and means ‘with Uma and Skanda’. In this particular representation, Shiva and Uma sit on a rectangular pedestal, with the child Skanda standing between them. This representation developed in Southeast India and was particularly popular during the 10th–13th centuries. On feast days these images were carried in procession around the city.
