The richness and beauty of the highlands, extending over animmense area both north and south of the Zambesi, had for manyyears been known to both English and Boer travellers. Mr,Rhodes, in his early days at Kimberley, met many an adventurouswanderer who had come from that wonderful region, and theirglowing tales perhaps first inspired in him that ambitious dreamof the creation of a great new British colony that should includeall the finest country in South and Central Africa.
