Spc. Samantha Romero (left), combat medic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, conducts a foot patrol with 1st STB’s personal security detail, Jan. 9, through Kandahar City, Kandahar province. In addition to her clinic duties, Romero, a native of Madison, Wis., is also part of the 1st STB commander’s personal security detail. After giving birth to her son and undergoing a double mastectomy, Romero waived reconstructive surgery, as well as postpartum recovery in order to deploy with her unit.
