St. Mary's Falls Canal, Soo Locks, Military Defense Subcomplex, St. Mary's River at Falls, Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa County, MI
Summary
Significance: Accommodating the passage of iron ore-laden ships between Lakes Superior and Huron, the Soo Locks Complex was a vital component in the transportation system that provided many American steel mills with raw material. As such it was critically important that the facility be protected from enemy sabotage, as well as direct attack. At various times through its history, the Soo Complex was heavily fortified. The barracks in the Military Defense Subcomplex are associated with those defense efforts, and thus played an integral role in maintaining navigation on the St. Marys River.
