This land being farther north thanthey intended to go, they put about, with a fairwind, and sailed down the coast in an endeavorto find some place near the Hudson River atwhich to settle. Encountering shoals and break-ers, and much alarmed, they resolved to returnto the cape they had first sighted, and, sailingaround its point, came finally to anchor on No-vember eleventh, after a voyage of sixty-five da\ s,in the safe, landlocked harbor where Province-town now stands. Their first act was to givethanks to the Almighty, who had brought themsafely through the perils of the voyage to settheir feet on the stable earth once again. Brad-ford, in his narrative, says that he paused halfamazed at this poor peoples present condition. Having overcome the vast ocean and unfore-seen troubles, they had no friends to welcomethem nor inns to refresh their weather-beatenbodies.
