Stag beetle (Lucanidae), Congaree National Park, 2012.
Summary
Stag beetles include about 1,200 species of beetle, separated into just four subfamilies. It's probably not surprising that the name derives from the male beetles' distinctive mandibles, which are found in most stag beetle species. Do these mandibles remind you of stag antlers?
