Stamp of the German Democratic Republic; 1988; commemorative issue to "Leipzig Spring Fair 1988"; The depicted stamp is GDR No. 3153 from 1988 and shows as motive the entrance to the restaurant "Auerbachs Keller" in the "Mädler-Passage" in Leipzig. This "Passage" is a roofed shopping mall after Paris template named after "Anton Mädler" (1854-1925, other source: 1864-1925), a suitcase manufacturer, since 1838 existing as "königlich-sächsisch concessionierte Koffer- und Taschenfabrik, Motitz Mädler, initially in Wurzen, from 1889 also with a production branch in Leipzig-Lindenau, then title: "Königlich Sächsischer Hoflieferant") (The restaurant "Auerbachs Keller" is existing since 1438 and was famous by Johann Wolfgang Goethe which in his work "Faust I" described the meeting of Dr.Faustus and Mephistopheles to "Auerbachs Keller" in Leipzig. (Re-opening of the restaurant at the 22 February 1913 with partially a late-gothic cross-rips vault (The re-opening took place still long before the opening of the "Mädler-Passage")).; This stamp was postmarked with an one-circle first-day special cancellation with 40.0 mm diameter from 1085 Berlin, 8 March 1988 showing the weight out of the fair commodities in 1580 after a old copper etching as central motive over inscription.
