Summary
Rescuers inspect the wreckage of the Camp Mountain train disaster, 1947.
This smash occurred near Camp Mountain on Monday 5 May 1947. A special picnic train carrying 500 women and children which had been organised by the Customs and Excise department's social club crashed on the Samford Range at 9:55am. It was Queensland's worst rail smash.
The smash, 13 1/2 miles from Central Station, killed 15 and injured 30. The leading carriage jumped the rail in a cutting a few miles on the Brisbane side of Closeburn, where the picnic was to have been held. An emergency rescue gang was formed from local farmers and storekeepers. (Information taken from: Courier Mail, 6 May 1947, p. 1).
