Summary

We travel someway south of Newry to the town of Gorey today. I love this photograph especially the finials atop the telegraph poles and the fancy bed in the right foreground. ..Combined with the bed, we have broomsticks outside T Byrne's on the left - making for our first filmic reference: "Bedknobs and Broomsticks". And continuing the movie theme there seems to be a "Man on Ledge" standing entirely outside an upper-floor window of #78 Main Street...With thanks to the Wexford Echo newspaper poster (also outside Byrne's) and investigations by Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) it seems plausible that we're in the middle of the provided catalogue range - possibly the 1920s......Photographer: Unknown..Collection: Eason Photographic Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000033799 ) ..Date: Between 1900-1939 (possibly 1920s)..NLI Ref: EAS_3728 ( vtls000559348 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )

The popularity of “moving pictures” grew in the 1920s. Movie "palaces" sprang up in all major cities. For a quarter or 25 cents, Americans escaped their problems and lose themselves in another era or world. People of all ages attended the movies with far more regularity than today, often going more than once per week. By the end of the decade, weekly movie attendance swelled to 90 million people. The silent movies gave rise to the first generation of movie stars. At the end of the decade, the dominance of silent movies began to wane with the advance of sound technology.
