Summary

The original finding aid described this as:

Description: Extravehicular Activity (EVA) 1 on Flight Day 4 to service the Hubble Space Telescope on this second servicing mission (HST SM-02). Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) suited astronauts Mark Lee and Steve Smith work on the telescope. Smith, standing on Remote Manipulator System (RMS) Manipulator Foot Restraint (MFR), prepares to remove the new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) from the Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) Carrier (ORUC) Axial Scientific Instrument Protective Enclosure (ASIPE) stowage container in the payload bay. The old Goddard High Resolution Spectrometer (GHRS) ORU is temporarily mounted on the ORUC aft fixture and the +V2 aft shroud doors are open showing the empty space where the STIS will be mounted (001-3). Open aft shroud doors and portion of the telescope are framed by the aft flight deck windows (004-7). Nighttime views of EVA activity illuminated by payload bay lights (008-32). Smith inserts the new STIS ORU into the aft shroud with Lee (left) watching (008-14). Smith works in the Second Axial Carrier (SAC) ASIPE to remove the new Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectometer (NICMOS) as Lee watches (015-32).
